Obituary

Gladys Louise (Omohundro) Tyree, 88, of Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2018 at home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. She was born on December 13, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA as one of 3 children to Myron B. and Ruth (Walkenshaw) Omohundro. She married Alan Dean Tyree on November 23, 1951. Survivors include husband, Alan Dean Tyree of the home; children Lawrence Wayne Tyree and wife Rene Tyree, and Sharon Avis Tyree; grandchildren Kathryn Marie (Tyree) Zimmerman and husband Aaron Zimmerman, Matthew Alexander Tyree and wife Andrea Tyree, and Michael Jon Tyree; and great grandchildren Elijah, Oliver and Arthur Zimmerman. Her two brothers John, and Arthur and son Jonathan preceded her in death. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Gladys graduated from high school there. Gladys met and married her husband Alan while working for the Council of Twelve Apostles at Community of Christ headquarters, Independence, MO. When the family was assigned to a church mission in French Polynesia, Gladys, Alan and newborn Larry traveled to the island of Tahiti where they served from 1953 through 1964. While there, Gladys became fluent in Tahitian and conversant in French. She helped organize many children’s programs for the church while there and taught many classes. Gladys was an excellent cook and mastered many dishes in American, French, and Tahitian cuisine. She was gifted at playing piano and organ and often accompanied her husband Alan sharing in performance of music for a variety of occasions. Upon return to the United States, Gladys studied and became proficient at courtroom stenography as a courtroom recorder and worked for several judges in the Jackson County Courthouse. She was called back from retirement to serve during several high profile cases. Gladys loved all children and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren immensely. The family encourages contributions to Community of Christ Temple Endowment Fund in lieu of flowers.
