Wanda Bayne Modlin, 92, longtime resident of Independence, Missouri, died peacefully at the Bluffs in Columbia, Missouri on November 23, 2018. Cremation is planned; with a memorial service to be held at 10:00am Saturday, December 1st, 2018, at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Latham, MO.
Wanda was born on November 1, 1926 in the mid-Missouri town of Latham to Samuel R. Bayne and Beulah F. Bayne. She graduated from Latham High School in 1945 and moved to Kansas City, Missouri to attend business school. While living in Kansas City she met the love of her life, John Sherwood Modlin. They were married on June 20, 1948. John predeceased Wanda in 2017 after almost 69 years of marriage.
Family and home gave Wanda great joy. Reunions organized by her relatives and held near her home town of Latham, along with family gatherings in Kansas City and California, helped maintain the close family ties that were so important to her. She was a member of the Raytown Christian Church and the Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) where she developed life-long friendships and participated in bible study and charitable work. She loved her adopted home town of Independence and appreciated its historic significance – sharing the Truman Library and Truman home with visiting friends and family. She was a member of the Independence Young Matrons and served as a tour guide for the historic 1855 “old jail” museum in Independence. Wanda’s hallmark was kindness. She was extremely empathetic and quick to assist others in need. She was a loving mother, wife and friend who touched many lives – she will be missed!
She is survived by son, John Michael Modlin of Raytown, Mo.; daughter, Suzanne Modlin Flanegin (Mark) of Columbia, Mo.; grandson, John Patrick Flanegin of Columbia, Mo.; Aunt Lois Charles of Independence, Mo.; sister-in-law, Virginia Bayne of St. Martins, Mo; sister-in-law, Mary Modlin O'Neal of Overland Park, Kan.; sister-in-law, Shirley Modlin of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; nephew, Andrew Bayne (Chris) of Kansas City, MO; niece, Marsha Rodriguez; among other loving relatives.
